The director was haru. (HUG inc.), a creative director who has worked on many of Hitsujibungaku's artworks and was also in charge of creating the jacket for this album. Based on the 12 songs included in the album, the works created in collaboration with seven artists show the possibility of freely interpreting and expressing music. We talked to haru. about the intention of the concept of "garden" and the thoughts behind the exhibition.

Hitsujibungaku is "the same generation living in the same era"

――First, please tell us about your relationship with Hitsujibungaku.

haru.: Eight years ago, when I first moved to Tokyo, member Moeka (Shiotsuka) invited me to an interview, which was the first opportunity. Hitsujibungaku was still an indie band at the time, and I think the live houses were small. After a while, I was asked to design the jacket for the album "The Youths". After that, I was involved in the artwork in the same way several times, and that's how I got to where I am today.

We're not close enough to talk a lot about private matters, but we do talk a lot at the time of production. I've always been watching them closely, and I feel like they are "the same generation living in the same era".

――How do you see Hitsujibungaku's progress so far? I think the scale of the band has grown compared to the beginning.

haru.: I've been watching them thinking, "They've always been honest with themselves." The members of Hitsujibungaku don't try to hide the pain in their hearts, like "This is hard'' or "This world is kind of hard."

But it's not always the same. I was also allowed to make the jacket for the previous album "our hope", but at that time, there was an air of being indoors due to the corona disaster, and the band also had a strong feeling of "wanting to send a signal to the outside world". So the jacket also has a composition of "a woman looking out from the car window".

But this time, "12 hugs (like butterflies)" is themed on "butterfly hugs," or hugging yourself, so there is a nuance of "confronting what's happening inside you." I am always conscious that I have to create things while understanding what they are thinking each time.

――At the exhibition venue, you can listen to a talk between haru. and Hitsujibungaku, and there is also a conversation about this album. The story that they tried to bring out "the slightly aggressive part of themselves" without hiding it was impressive.

haru.: I think "taking care of yourself" is really difficult. It's something you can't do unless you have time to spare, and sometimes you get tired of the negative emotions inside of you. But we often talked about how it would be nice if we could accept all of that and say, "It can't be helped" and "That's the way it is."

The story of the people surrounding the band

――Please tell us again about the concept of this exhibition, "Secret Garden".

haru.: We are creating an exhibition space by envisioning the band Hitsujibungaku as a "garden" and the staff and creators who cultivate it as "gardeners". When I was thinking about the concept, I just happened to know about "The Moving Garden" by French gardener Gilles Clément, and I thought that "garden" was a good theme.

The garden is tended and nurtured by the gardener, and the band is just like a garden. Members and creators add their hands to it every day as gardeners. But it's not completely up to human will, and sometimes a storm comes and messes everything up. Still, by cultivating it together with everyone, it will lead to the future. I was hoping that the whole process could be expressed in the theme of "Secret Garden".

Also, I myself originally liked "engawa" (verandas), and I felt that the garden was a similar space. It's not as personal as the inside of a house, but it's not completely public like a road or a square. I thought that intermediate state was just right.

――How did this exhibition get started in the first place?

haru.: At the end of last year, New Gallery contacted me. When I was asked to create an exhibition based on the album, I was really troubled. The album itself is already a finished work, so I wondered what I should make based on it.

But when I think about it again, the album jacket is also an act of creating something creative for a finished product called a song, so it's the same as this exhibition. I always make jackets with the intention of "dressing the music in the best clothes", but I realized that I could make an exhibition in the same way. From there, the theme of "The Story of the Gardeners Surrounding Hitsujibungaku" emerged.

――How did you come up with the specific content of the exhibition?

haru.: It was decided that we would create works by freely expanding our interpretation of each of the 12 songs included in the album. I read the liner notes that Moeka wrote for me and thought about it, but it was difficult to figure out what to make for the finished songs...I had many meetings with the HUG members over and over again.

――The booklet distributed to visitors at the venue actually includes words and pictures that haru. imagined from the music.

haru.: This was also the rough draft for each artist to ask for. When I thought about how to make the space interesting, I came up with a lot of wild ideas, such as a bat with hair growing on it and a tornado...I was worried if it would be accepted, but fortunately, all the members enjoyed it.

――In a sense, it's like a secondary creation.

haru.: That's right. So, I was really worried about how the fans would perceive it. But my interpretation is just an example, so I would be happy if people could think, "It's okay to have such a free way of listening."

Co-creation with 7 artists

――Please tell us about the 7 participating artists and their respective works.

haru.: Ava is a Taiwanese artist who made the beaded dress that Moeka is wearing on the album jacket. This time, we are exhibiting the dress as it is. Each bead is spun one by one, and I like that you can feel the time that has been accumulated until the work is created.

Nico Perez took the jacket photo.
